GLP-1 weight-loss injections, explained simply

Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic all belong to a group of once-weekly injections known as GLP-1 medicines. They work with your body's own appetite signals, helping you feel fuller for longer, reducing food cravings and slowing how quickly your stomach empties. The result, for most people, is that eating less feels far more natural and much less of a daily battle. They are not a magic fix and they are not a substitute for looking after yourself - they work best alongside realistic changes to your diet, movement and habits, with proper supervision from a pharmacist who knows your history. Wegovy (semaglutide)

Wegovy is the semaglutide brand licensed specifically for weight management in adults, and it is one of the most widely recognised weight-loss injections in Ireland. It is given once a week and the dose is increased gradually over several months, which helps your body adjust and keeps side effects to a minimum. Because it is designed for weight management, Wegovy goes up to a higher maintenance dose (2.4 mg) than Ozempic. Many people find their relationship with food genuinely changes on it - the constant "food noise" quietens down, portions shrink naturally, and snacking loses its grip.

Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a newer once-weekly injection that acts on two appetite hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) rather than one. In studies it has produced some of the strongest weight-management results of any treatment currently available, which is why so many people ask for it by name. Like the others, it is started at a low dose and increased in careful steps. Each Mounjaro dispensing from us includes your NovoFine needles, so you have everything you need to inject safely at home.

Ozempic (semaglutide) - what you should know

Ozempic contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy - semaglutide - and works in the same appetite-reducing way. The important difference is that Ozempic is licensed in Ireland for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, where it helps control blood sugar, rather than being licensed specifically for weight loss. Because it also reduces appetite, some prescribers do use it as part of a wider weight-management plan, but this is a decision for you and your prescriber to make together. We want to be straight with you about that, so you can make an informed choice rather than a rushed one.

Ozempic is a once-weekly injection and, like Wegovy, the dose is stepped up slowly (0.25 mg, then 0.5 mg, then 1 mg) to help your body settle in and reduce nausea. Whichever semaglutide product you and your prescriber decide on, our role is the same: we check it is safe for you, dispense it correctly, show you exactly how to use the pen and store it, and stay available for every question along the way. If Ozempic is in short supply nationally, or if we think another option would suit you better, we will tell you honestly and help you find the right path.

How to get your prescription

These are prescription-only medicines. Talk to your GP or an online doctor to see if the treatment is suitable, then ask for your prescription to be sent electronically via Healthmail to Pharmacy Hub Killinarden. Our pharmacists carry out their own safety checks before dispensing your pen.

Each price covers a four-week supply at the stated strength. Because doses are increased gradually, most people start on a lower strength and move up over time - we will always explain what your next step is likely to cost before you get there, so there are no surprises.
