A new era: your pharmacist can now prescribe
Ireland has changed the law so that community pharmacists can now assess and, where appropriate, prescribe treatment for a defined list of eight common conditions - without you needing a GP appointment. This national Common Conditions Service means faster, more convenient care for the everyday illnesses that used to mean a wait for the doctor.
Our pharmacist has completed the required training and follows the official clinical protocols set by the HSE and the PSI. After a short, private consultation we can prescribe a suitable treatment, recommend an over-the-counter option, or refer you on if that is the safer choice for you.
The eight conditions we can prescribe for
Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
Sneezing, itchy eyes and a runny or blocked nose from allergies. We can assess it and prescribe stronger treatment where over-the-counter options are not enough.
Cold sores
Painful blisters around the lips caused by the herpes virus. We can recommend or prescribe antiviral treatment.
Conjunctivitis
A red, sore, gritty or weeping eye. We can assess infective conjunctivitis and prescribe treatment if it is needed.
Impetigo
A common, contagious bacterial skin infection. We can assess it and prescribe an antibiotic treatment.
Oral thrush
A fungal infection in the mouth causing white patches and soreness. We can assess and prescribe an antifungal.
Shingles
A painful, blistering rash caused by the chickenpox virus, for adults aged 18 and over. Caught early, we can assess and prescribe antiviral treatment.
Cystitis / UTI
An uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection in women aged 16 to 64. We can assess your symptoms and prescribe antibiotics where appropriate.
Vaginal thrush
A common vaginal yeast infection. We can assess and supply or prescribe the right treatment.
Each condition has clinical criteria that decide whether pharmacist treatment is suitable. There are some exclusions - for example by age, during pregnancy, or if your symptoms suggest something more serious - and in those cases we will refer you to your GP.
Beyond the eight: everyday advice
Even outside the formal service, our pharmacist can advise on a huge range of everyday complaints - coughs, colds, sore throats, sinus problems, skin conditions, tummy troubles, aches and pains, and children's ailments. This advice is always free, and we will recommend the right over-the-counter treatment or point you to your GP if that is what you need.
What it costs
Talking to our pharmacist is free. If you are treated under the Common Conditions Service a consultation fee may apply, and the cost of any medicine depends on your eligibility - medical card holders and those on the Drug Payment Scheme are covered as normal. We will always be clear about any cost before you go ahead.

Do I need to book?
No - just call in. You can also book a quick word with the pharmacist online and tell us what it is about.
Can the pharmacist really prescribe now?
Yes. Under the new national Common Conditions Service, trained pharmacists can prescribe treatment for eight specified conditions after a consultation, without a GP prescription.
When should I see a GP instead?
If your symptoms are severe, unusual or persistent, or if you fall outside the clinical criteria, we will tell you honestly and refer you to your GP.
Is there a charge?
General advice is always free. If you are treated under the Common Conditions Service a consultation fee may apply, and any medicine is charged as normal under your medical card or the Drug Payment Scheme. We will always be upfront about cost first.
What ages is it for?
It depends on the condition - each has its own clinical criteria. Some are for adults only. We will let you know if the service is suitable for you or your child.
