Know your numbers: understanding your blood pressure

High blood pressure is often called the silent condition, because it usually has no symptoms at all. You can feel perfectly well and still have a reading that needs attention. That is exactly why a quick, regular check is one of the smartest things you can do for your long-term health, and it takes just a few minutes with us.

What the two numbers mean

A blood pressure reading has two numbers, for example 120 over 80. The top number (systolic) is the pressure when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) is the pressure when your heart rests between beats. Both matter, and we will always explain your own numbers in plain English.

  • Around 120/80 is generally considered a healthy target for most adults
  • Consistently raised readings can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke over time
  • A single high reading is not a diagnosis, which is why we look at the pattern
One reading is only part of the picture

Blood pressure naturally rises and falls through the day. If a reading is high, we may suggest a repeat check, or 24-hour monitoring, to get a truer picture before anyone worries.

Simple habits that help

The everyday things genuinely make a difference. None of this is about being perfect, just steady:

  • Ease back on salt, and cook from scratch where you can
  • Stay active, even a brisk daily walk counts
  • Watch alcohol, and stop smoking if you can
  • Manage stress and protect your sleep
  • Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed
You cannot feel high blood pressure, so the only way to know your numbers is to check them. It is quick, it is free in store, and it could not be more worth it.

When to come in

If you have not had your blood pressure checked in a while, if it runs in your family, or if you simply want peace of mind, pop in any time during opening hours or book a slot online. We will take an accurate reading, explain what it means, and give you clear, honest advice on your next steps.
